Taslima Nasrin: ‘Islam is not my religion…’—A Definitive Statement on Eid

Banglahunt Desk: Renowned for her outspoken nature, writer Taslima Nasreen has often found herself in controversies due to her remarks and writings. It has been many years since she last visited Bangladesh, and she has now made India her home. She is frequently seen at various events in Delhi and was even spotted attending Durga Puja celebrations there.

However, on the occasion of Eid, she made a statement that has left many, especially Muslims, deeply offended. Born into a Muslim family, Taslima has long renounced religion. Today, despite receiving Eid greetings, she responded in a manner that has stirred significant debate.

Taslima, who has always been vocal about issues in Bangladesh, has previously raised concerns about various conflicts in the country, including questioning the education system in high madrasas.

This time, upon receiving Eid greetings, she reacted sharply. Taking to social media, she addressed not only Muslims but all those who wished her, stating:

“I request my Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist friends and acquaintances, both known and unknown, not to send me ‘Eid Mubarak’ messages. Those who consider me a Muslim, I want to clarify with utmost humility that I have been free from religion since childhood. Islam is not my religion. I am not a Muslim. I believe in humanism, in humanity.”

Taslima is known for being highly active on social media, and nothing seems to deter her from expressing her opinions. In response to her statement, some have pointed out that religion is an integral part of culture. One user remarked, “Religion is a part of culture. Culture is created by people and has been practiced since ancient times. Perhaps I have seen you celebrating Durga Puja?”

Her statement has once again ignited discussions about religion, identity, and personal beliefs, highlighting the ongoing debates surrounding faith and secularism in society.
