Banglahunt Desk: West Bengal may experience more heatwave days than usual between April and June, along with increased discomfort due to high temperatures. Not just Bengal, but most parts of the country may witness similar conditions in the coming three months. Apart from West Bengal, 16 other states are expected to experience prolonged heatwave conditions, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Typically, India records around 4-7 heatwave days during April to June. However, Mritunjay Mohapatra, the head of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has stated that heatwave conditions may persist for 2-4 days longer than usual in most regions of Northeast India, Central India, and Northwestern India. Some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha may experience heatwaves for 10-11 days. During this period, maximum temperatures across most parts of the country are likely to remain above normal. Only a few areas in western and eastern India may see normal temperatures.

In light of the heatwave threat, the central government has advised states to take precautionary measures in advance. State authorities have been directed to review the preparedness of hospitals in their respective regions. Meanwhile, IMD has predicted that rainfall across the country in April is expected to be normal, with an average precipitation of 39.2 mm.

In West Bengal, certain districts have already recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C since the month of Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April), while some areas have come close to touching the 40°C mark. However, rain is expected in the state later this week. From Wednesday, rainfall is likely in West Midnapore, Jhargram, and Purulia, followed by showers in Kolkata, Howrah, and other districts of South Bengal on Friday.
