Banglahunt Desk: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his contributions to the establishment of human rights and democracy in the country.

In December last year, an advocacy group called the “Pakistan World Alliance” (PWA) was established. This group is associated with the Norwegian political party Partiet Sentrum. Members of the PWA announced Imran Khan’s nomination through a social media post.

On Sunday, Partiet Sentrum stated in a social media post, “Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his contributions to human rights and democracy in Pakistan.”

Every year, hundreds of nominations are submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. After an eight-month-long selection process, the committee members choose the recipient. In 2019, Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was also nominated for his significant efforts in establishing peace in South Asia.

In April 2022, Imran Khan lost his position as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He has been in prison since August 2023. In January this year, a Pakistani court sentenced him to 14 years in prison on charges of abuse of power and corruption. Additionally, he has been convicted in three other cases. However, the “Kaptaan” (Captain) has rejected all allegations against him.
